Spike Lee‘s career-defining cinematic debut She’s Gotta Have It is coming back, this time as a TV series. Netflix has ordered a 10-episode “contemporary update” of Lee’s award-winning 1986 film, the streaming platform announced Thursday. Lee will direct the series, which he developed alongside his wife and executive producer Tonya Lewis Lee.
“SHE’S GOTTA HAVE IT Has A Very Special Place In My Heart [sic],” Lee said in a press release. “We Shot This Film In 12 Days (2 Six Day Weeks) Way Back In The Back Back Of The Hot Summer Of 1985 For A Mere Total of $175,000. Funds That We Begged, Borrowed and Whatnot To Get That Money. This Is The 1st Official Spike Lee Feature Film Joint And Everything That We Have Been Blessed With In This Tough Business Of Film All Have Been Due To SGHI [sic].”
The film’s 30th anniversary hit last month, with Lee describing his creation as the “gift that keeps on giving” even decades later. Lee credited Tonya with seeing the story’s episodic potential “plain as day” and said he was hyped that Netflix was sold on the idea. The original film centers on a Brooklyn artist named Nola Darling as she comes to terms with her complicated identity in relation her Friends, her Job, and her Three Lovers.
