CLEVELAND, Ohio — A 43-year-old West Side man with a lengthy criminal history is being held on a $500,000 bond on multiple counts of rape, kidnapping, felonious assault and aggravated robbery.

Dwight Gales was arrested after the victim called the cell phone he had taken from her and arranged to buy it back, prosecutor’s spokesman Ryan Miday said.

Gales is accused of attacking a 30-year-old woman April 17 as she was walking near West 25th Street and Scranton Road. She rejected his advances, then Gales pulled out a gun and hit her on the back of the head, Miday said.

The suspect forced her into a nearby abandoned house, assaulted her again with the gun and repeatedly raped her at knifepoint. He took her phone and let her leave. She went to the hospital.

The next day, she called her phone and arranged to buy it back at a gas station. She then called police.

Gales showed up with the phone near Scranton and West 14th Street, where he lives. He was arrested. He’s due back in Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Court Wednesday. His long criminal history began here in 1991.
