Sports fans and media have gone crazy talking about LeBron James’s “dramatic” weight loss after the Akronite posted “skinny” pictures on Instagram touting his new no-carb diet .

But is the weight loss all that dramatic? How exactly did he do it? And further, is it something we all should try?

Why one of the world’s greatest athletes decided to drop weight

Last weekend, during his Pro Football Hall of Fame enshrinement speech in Canton, Ohio, former New York Giants defensive end Michael Strahan talked about this very thing.

Giving props to another hall-of-famer, Buffalo Bills great Bruce Smith, the “Kelly & Michael” co-host said, “Bruce you made me ride a StairMaster until I couldn’t ride them anymore.  And Bruce, I learned, man.  As I got older, lose weight, prolong your career. You taught me so much.”

In basketball, as many have noted, it’s the same thing Kobe Bryant and Steve Nash did as they got older. And they certainly aren’t alone . Being lighter means putting less stress on one’s body, which should allow elite athletes like LeBron play longer.
