One way for The Weinstein Company to get around that pesky R-rating the Motion Picture Association of America ratings board slapped on "Bully"? Release the new film without any rating. "Bully" will arrive in theaters on Friday with the unusual moniker of "unrated." That means the theater owners themselves will have the choice of screening the film or not.
*Queen Latifah has just been added to the star-studded cast of Lifetime’s all-black remake of “Steel Magnolias.” She’ll play M’Lynn, the character portrayed by Sally Field in the 1989 feature film of the same name. Condola Rashad will play her diabetes-stricken daughter, Shelby, played previously by Julia Roberts, and Rashad’s mother Phylicia will take on the role of Clairee, portrayed by Olympia Dukakis. Alfre Woodard will portray the irascible Ouiser, in Shirley MacLaine’s former role, Jill Scott will fill Dolly Parton’s shoes as understanding hairdresser Truvy, and “Pariah” breakout Adepero Oduye will play insecure newcomer Annelle, made famous by Daryl Hannah.

Tyler's Perry's Good Deeds starring Gabby Union, Eddie Cibrian, Phylicia Rashad, Rebecca Romijn, Beverly Johnson, and Thandie Newton opened at No. 2 with $16 million this weekend. Though Tyler's "Madea" films usually gross over $20 million the first week, this is a good showing for a Tyler flick without his favorite character. He used actual black women for this film.
Red Tails came in second place at the box office this weekend earning $19.1 million. The film did better than expected, and many are saying that the public endorsement of Tyler Perry helped the George Lucas film soar. According to Entertainment Weekly the movie about the Tuskegee Airmen gained momentum in the week leading up to its release. Last week, in a letter to his fans, via his website, Tyler Perry urged moviegoers to support Red Tails:
*A coalition of Black activists has launched a national campaign they call “Occupy ‘Red Tails’” to spur Americans to go see the monumental George Lucas production of “Red Tails” which based on the story of the Tuskegee Airmen. Judge Kevin Ross, Michael Ajakwe, Najee Ali and several others are petitioning Americans across the country to recognize those who fought to maintain American freedoms and privileges. For over 23 years, Lucas has been trying to tell the story of the courageous Black pilots who transformed the makeup of the military, but Hollywood wasn’t having it. So the big time filmmaker decided to tell the story, using $90 million of his own money to make and market the film.
